Roles at a glance¶
Who can do this: everyone. This page describes what each role can do; your organization administrator assigns roles.
Every Pulse user has one role in each organization they belong to. The role decides what you see and what you can change. Most people belong to one organization; if you belong to several, your organization administrator gives you the same role in each.

Each role includes everything the roles to its left can do. For the complete list of actions and the exact behaviour of each control, see the Permissions matrix.
Viewer is the default role for a new account. Viewers watch conditions and download data but cannot change anything. Alarm notifications still reach viewers if they are members of a service's notification group.
Operators respond to alarms: they acknowledge, mute and schedule downtimes. See Acknowledging alarms and Muting and downtimes.
Organization administrators set up and maintain the organization: users, assets, devices, services and alarm limits. They see an Admin link at the top of every page that opens the administration area. See Administering your organization.
How a role shows in the interface¶
- Controls you are not allowed to use are generally not shown. An operator, for example, sees no Edit on a service's limits; a viewer sees no Acknowledge button.
- The Admin link appears only for organization administrators. If a viewer or operator types an administration address into the browser, Pulse refuses the request with the message "Admin privileges required" instead of showing a page. Use your browser's back button to return.
- If your account has not yet been placed in any organization, the dashboard shows "You are not assigned to any organizations. Please contact an administrator to gain access." and lists no services.
Actions done by Lab Monitors support¶
Some actions affect the platform beyond a single organization and are not available to organization administrators. Contact Lab Monitors support to:
- create a new organization, or move a user or device into a different organization;
- add a new device profile (sensor type) or change the commands a profile supports;
- register or remove a LoRaWAN gateway;
- retire (decommission) a device, bring a retired device back into service, or permanently delete a device.
